Now lets show you how we created this look!

First of all it is important to make sure your nails are clean and ready to be painted before we start, so we need to do a little bit of preparation. If you have nail polish on already, you will need to take it off with some nail polish remover. After this is done, I usually wash my hands just to just to ensure my nails are completely clean.

Then it’s time to tidy your nails up a little and shape them to how you want them with your file. If you want make your nails appear longer you can push back your cuticles. If you place your hand in some warm water for a few minutes, it will help soften your skin making it easier for you to do this.

Once you are ready, you should apply a base coat to your nail as this will protect your nails from being stained but also will make applying your nail polish much smoother. We used the Vitamin Base Coat (1) to do this.

Once your base coat is dry (this shouldn’t take too long), we can start moving on to the more exciting parts – deciding what colour you want your nails to be! For this look, we decided to have a white base colour as this will make it easier to paint the red stripes on! So, we painted ours nail with the nail polish in the colour French White (2). We applied 2 coats as this made sure the nails were covered well.

We recommend you apply two thin coats rather than one thick one as the thicker the coat, the longer it will take to dry!

Once the white nail polish is dry, the real fun begins – time to start creating the stripes! First of all, we have to plan where we want them – we used the tape technique to make it easier to paint on the thicker stripes for this look. To do this, we cut thin lines of tape and placed it over the nail to cover that area. This will stop the nail polish covering that bit of the nail. It is important you make sure your nail polish is dry before you place tape over your nail as this could take your nail polish off!

Once we were happy with the placement of the tape, it was time to paint on the stripes! We decided to use the gorgeous red colour (3) for the stripes for this nail look. When painting it on, it doesn’t matter if you get some of the nail polish on the tape. Once you are finished, gently take off the tape.

You can see pictures showing a little more detail about this technique on our tutorial for the Stripe and Flower Nail Look.

Next, we decided to add some thin lines in the space between the stripes. To do this, we used the flat drawing brush (5) with the nail polish in the colour Mulled Wine (3).

Now it’s time to do the stripes to your other nails. Remember, don’t paint them on your ring finger – that nail is for the candy cane!

Now it is time to paint the red outline for the candy cane on the ring finger! To do this, we used the dotting pen (6) with the nail polish in the colour Mulled Wine (3).

Now it’s time to add the final touch to this look – some gold dots on the ring finger nail! To do this, we used both ends of the dotting pen (7) with the nail polish in the colour Champagne Shimmer (4) to paint on some big and small dots.

And that’s it! How cute is this candy cane look?! Perfect for everyday wear with it getting closer to Christmas! So, if you are getting into that Christmassy mood – why not have fun and paint this look on your nails to show everyone!
